The Cambodian-style pagodas of the immense Wat Chai Wattanaram, scenically nestled on the banks of the Chao Praya river, in a mystical and highly suggestive context; the famous Wat Monkhon Bophitwith its imposing and highly revered Buddha statue in a sitting position. Although this statue has suffered several adversities over the centuries (struck by lightning that severed its head, burned in the fire that destroyed the structure during Burmese looting) it has withstood restoration work to date. In 1956, during an official visit to Ayutthaya, the Prime Minister of Burma donated 200,000 baht for the restoration of the vinharn where the statue was housed from the beginning.
