The Royal Palace is one of Bangkok's jewels: a complex of buildings, pavilions, gardens and temples in the heart of the city, the King's official residence until 1925. It was built in 1782 when King Rama I moved the capital from Thonburi, on the opposite bank of the river, at present Bangkok.
The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is one of the best known and visited within the Royal Palace complex, and the most important temple in Thailand. Its architecture is similar to that of the classical style buildings and temples of Ayutthaya.
