The famous Angkor sunrise happens in one spot, from one bridge, among several thousand tripods. It is lovely. It is also — thanks to a quirk of park geography entirely unknown to the bus tours — completely avoidable.

The reverse itinerary

While the crowds orbit the reflecting pond, our guests enter through the western gate at 6:30 and have the bas-relief galleries of the third enclosure entirely to themselves for the better part of an hour. The light is warmer than sunrise anyway. The stone carvings — nearly 2,000 apsaras, each face distinct — read better in raking gold than in blue pre-dawn.

Angkor does not need to be beaten. It needs to be sequenced.
